Python provides support for all common and many less know operating systems. Python programs run without or with minimal changes on different systems due to the largely platform independent standard library.
But Python can also take advantage of special features of the operating system windows such as the Component Object Model (COM). The COM allows automating applications independent from the programming language as long as it has an interface to COM. All Microsoft Office and many applications by other vendors provide COM interfaces.
Using Microsoft Excel the principles of writing COM clients are demonstrated. Reading and writing data to excel files are covered as well as formatting of tables. The participants are encouraged to bring own data and requirements for their manipulation to the course.
A COM server in Python is developed that offers the functionality of an example program to be used from other programming languages.
The work with Windows services is covered. Also the possibilities to access the event log are shown.
0.5 days
The participants can follow all steps directly on their computers. There are exercises at the end of each unit providing ample opportunity to apply the freshly learned knowledge.
Every participant receives comprehensive printed materials that cover the whole course content as wells as a CD with all source codes and used software.
The course may be combined with the course Python for Nonprogrammers or Python for Programmers.
